Andy,
My thoughts.
-Find a mentor first, in addition to advising you
about technology, you gain insight about the writing
field...plus, this person will look great as a
reference on the resume.

-Some writing jobs seem to focus on writing technology
and some focus on your technical knowledge in a
specific field.

One manager may not care if you don't know FrameMaker.
They are happy to pay to teach you as long as you can
write and have that telecom experience they can't find
from anyone else within 500 miles.

On the other hand, another manager can't do without
your FrameMaker and Robohelp skills, because they have
tight release dates, and are short on personnel and
money to train.

-This is just a thought as I've seen it happen in
other industries. Sometimes, the technology taught in
schools is based on cost.

X software company may sell their software to a school
for a cheap price. When the students come out of
school, they are already experienced using X software.
The graduates start looking for jobs requiring X
software even if it may not be the most useful or
common.

-Find a mentor.
