I have learned in the last day that there is a problem with my Web site, www.dmargulis.com, when it is viewed using Netscape 8 when it is set to "display like Internet Explorer" mode (I don't know if this setting is also available in Firefox).

For what it's worth, I don't see anything in your code that would cause it. I can suggest two things.
* close the IMG tag (<img src="" />) and see if that makes a difference (it shouldn't)
* try getting ride of the clip attribute from the css. I've never used this one, so I don't have experience with how it works, but it might be doing something you didn't expect

Honestly, though, I'm thinking this is a bug in Netscape 8. If the graphic is appearing in IE (which it is) and disappears in an IE emulator, then the emulator is busted. :-)

I wonder if the same behavior would occur if the page was valid html...?

Sean,

I've had some off-list correspondence with a number of people since the original post. Several interesting things have turned up.

The behavior is not completely consistent from person to person. One correspondent was able to click the blank area or refresh the home page to make the graphic visible; another wasn't. This was true after I made some minor changes, too.

One person reported that he tested a copy of the page with the graphic made one pixel smaller than the cell it was in and that this solved the problem (not something I've tested online).

Another person alerted me that naming the graphic "banner.jpg" triggers some blocking software. When I changed that, some people said, yes, that solved the problem; others said, no, it didn't.

All of this is going to be moot, though. A frequent list contributor, who shall remain nameless unless he tells me I can thank him publicly, has completely rewritten and reconstructed the site using--as you suggest--valid, up-to-date, up-to-snuff code. I haven't gone live with it, because I want to tweak some things first, and I'm in the middle of a couple of deadline-driven projects. But I am satisfied that once I have bulletproof code on the site, the Netscape bug won't be a problem.

I did report the bug to Netscape, by the way, as a couple of people suggested I do.

Dick
