What I'd like to know is -- Why doesn't Microsoft provide a setting
somewhere in the options that'll let you turn this "feature" off?????
But then, I guess there's no use asking why Microsoft does anything.

Back in February there was a thread discussing an annoyance of Word
styles that rabidly spawn other styles suffixed with "Char", so that,
for example, "Heading1" might eventually become "Heading1 Char Char
Char". The thread didn't come to any conclusion on the cause or how to
avoid / deal with the problem.

I just found this website which offers the explanation and a macro
solution:

Apparently Word creates these "linked" styles when paragraph styles are
applied to a selection of characters rather than a whole paragraph.
