I certainly run apps written for KDE under Gnome, and vice versa, and
both of these under XFCE, and X apps on my Linux box from my iBook over
SSH ...

Quite right about The GIMP, too. It's the Gnu (not Gnome) Image
Manipulation Program. There are Windows binaries (complete with
installer, if you like that sort of thing), and OS X binaries. The GIMP
runs free, anywhere.

Now, if you *really* hafta use a Windows box (and Windows apps) to do
screen caps of a desktop Linux system, VNC's an option. Just need to
run `vino` (VNC server) on the Linux box, a VNC client on the Windows
box, and open a VNC session.

Now the Linux box's screen is just another application window on your
Windows system. Capture at will. Might not be ideal, but then again it
might be.
