I suspect that it wouldn't. Getting a program to run within a single
window can be difficult enough. Getting a program to temporarily usurp
the X Windows system is another level of complexity altogether.

However, your comment does remind me that anybody documenting GNU/Linux
might consider using vmware.

Just a correction: As the name implies, gnome-core is only the basics of
the desktop, and does not include any utilities, tools or programs. The
GIMP is independent of both GNOME and KDE -- and, in the latest
versions, it wouldn't matter much if things were otherwise, because both
desktops do a great job of running each others' applications.

Maybe you were thinking of the fact that the GTK widgets, which
originated in the GIMP are now widely used in GNOME programs?
