I suspect that what my upper management is really thinking may be
"cheap summer help," but if I do host someone called an intern, I'd
like to make sure I actually provide something useful to the intern.

We use interns at our company, and I get one of my own this summer.

We are hiring a young man who has just completed his first year in college. Part of the reason is that he is a "blank slate" -- he doesn't bring a lot of previous experience or real-world knowledge that will slow him down. He is young and eager to learn.

Because I deal with software development life cycle documentation, I will spend the first week or two training him on our life cycle (iterative with incremental releases, using an existing set of templates). Then, because he has coded in the past, I will assign him to write the design documents for our software -- the document that I don't have time or the inclination to write.

We also have two small systems that have been around for years, but have absolutely no documentation. It shouldn't take long for him to document them (the databases behind them have about 5 table each), and will be good experience.
