FWIW, the _Apple Publications Style Guide_, May 2003, specifically recommends using "dialog," not "dialog box." There are entries under _box_, _dialog_, and _dialog box_.

Sun and IBM do not directly address the issue (that I could see), but assume the longer form in their text, though it appears infrequently.

I'd say that, as with so much of our terminology, it's a term in transition and that for a technical audience, the trend is towards the shorter form.
