Companies may radically change their methods to avoid lawsuits. They
could have been in trouble with a salaried "exempt" employee who proved
they were not exempt and then demanded back pay for extra work etc. This
could be a change to protect themselves from this situation.

If a company really wanted to pay you less it would be easier with a
salary because they could just demand extra work (obviously much of this
depends on state and/or union agreements and laws).

I certainly wouldn't assume a company would make such a change out of
the goodness of their heart, but there could be other reasons other then
figuring out a way to pay employees less.
