A quick comment:

I am not yet convinced that single source is possible. I still view the
world, so to speak, as a division between "book-style" and "help-style".
I think that trying to have one source for both makes *both* less than
ideal.

Of course, I've yet to encounter a situation where I needed to put
exactly the same information into both online help and books (electronic
or otherwise).
