Here's one idea I've seen that appears to work great--GLASS. That's
right, just mount a big piece of glass on a light colored wall. A thin
spacer will give enough space to slide paper behind. That gives you a
chance to underlay printed material and mark it up to your heart's
content. It may not be good for every business, but it works in
engineering environments.

Glass cleans up nicely too.

I wish I could claim the idea was mine.
