Where I am now, I'd be producing much better documentation if I had
deeper knowledge of several of the above (substitute SQL for Oracle,
.NET for C++, CAST for SODA, etc.) plus others.

To what limited background do you see that they SHOULD they have?
Word and FrameMaker?
