In this case, why bother striving for high quality in tech communication? Mediocrity seems king...

The reason to strive for quality is that you are personally driven to turn out the best work you can, for your own satisfaction, whether anyone else can tell the difference or not. When that drive starts to push costs up without delivering value for the company, though, there's a problem.

This dynamic tension between the desire to do good work and the desire to give the customer good value can either inspire truly creative improvements in the way your company works or it can drive you completely around the bend. And there is a continuum of other possible outcomes, too, I'm sure. Sometimes this is nature's way of telling you to find another job; other times it's just an interesting challenge. I guess it depends on the individual and the specific circumstances.
