Re: STC chapter question -- what should an employer expect?
Let's say your an employer.
And you gots a pubs dept. with 5 writers and a pubs manager.
What would you, as the employer (meaning the boss of the pubs manager)
want to get in return for signing your crew up for the STC?
Am NOT (repeat: NOT) looking for bashing here.
It depends ;-)
If they are all long-time employees who somehow wound up in tech pubs but don't have any real expertise, I would expect them to improve overall quality of their output. Similarly, if they are new employees with little experience (with or without relevant education), basically warm bodies off the street, I'd expect them to gain quite a bit in terms of technique. If they are experienced tech writers who've been around and who come from a variety of other companies, I might expect them to stay up to date with trends and new approaches to documentation, and I'd hope that providing the perk would improve their morale and loyalty.
However, for my money, I'd rather encourage all of them to subscribe to techwr-l, instead. The cost to me, in terms of the worktime they spend reading the list, would probably be about the same as the time lost to STC functions; but I think the benefits to the company would be substantially higher.
