I've read a few posts on this with interest. One big concern is not
being fluent in Mandarin or Cantonese. I have heard, at least for
Taiwan, that English-speaking only candidates are not greatly desirable
because you won't be able to effectively interact with the
Chinese-speaking developers.
Another concern - I have had direct experience where I was told that
Taiwanese companies won't assist you in getting a visa or with moving
expenses to get to Taiwan. They wouldn't even guarantee you a job. You
would have to move there, then apply locally, then hope they employ you.
Would you move under those circumstances? Granted this was about 5 years
ago - perhaps that's changed somewhat?
On the other hand, if you speak Chinese and English, and want to move to
Asia, I think an experienced tech writer would be able to have good
chances of getting a job, based on the documentation I've seen from
Taiwanese products. The industrial parks in Taiwan are doing very well
from what I read, and I would think they would pursue a multi-lingual
tech writer with interest.
I have no knowledge of mainland China however.
