"keilanhoo" wondered: <<For various reasons, the network support staff
want me to upgrade to the latest version of Microsoft Office.
Apparently, installing the upgrade is all or nothing, so upgrading
would replace the Word 2002 I'm currently using with Word 2003. Can I
get some information on the differences between the versions?>>
Consensus on copyediting-l is that the "sweet spot" for Word was around
Word 2000, with 2002 (aka "XP") being an appalling upgrade, and that
2003 undoes some (not all) of the damage introduced in 2002. Haven't
used either (I'm on a Mac), but what I've read from people whose
opinions I trust has discouraged me from upgrading to Word 2004, the
Mac equivalent of 2003.
<<I don't like Word 2002, but at least I'm used to it now and I think
I've found all the boobytraps in it so I can make it work for me. Is
2003 worth upgrading, or would I simply be trading one set of problems
for a different set?>>
From all accounts, 2003 is a distinct improvement on 2002.
