Sometimes illustrations would be illegible if every item had its name
as the callout. Using numbers can simplify a drawing. The slight extra
mental effort to match a name to a number can be offset when you know
the name and you have to find a particular item in the drawing. That's
if (that's a very big IF) the numbers are systematically arranged. Any
advantage is thrown out the window if the numbers are placed willy-
nilly throughout the illustration.
