Interestingly enough, my copy of the Microsoft Manual of Style for
Technical Publications says:

<start quote>

run vs. execute

Avoid using execute to refer to carrying out a command or running a
program, especially in end-user documentation. Use run to refer to
programs, queries, and macros and carry out to refer to actions and
commands. In technical documentation, it's acceptable to use execute to
refer to programming processes, especially if required by the interface,
but if possible use run or write around the use.

Correct
While Windows defragments your disk, you can use your computer to carry
out other tasks.
You can temporarily stop Disk Defragmenter so you can run other programs
at full speed.

<end quote>
