Yes, but the potential is always there for someone to take it up again. If a product like FrameMaker ceases development, the owner isn't likely to release the code. The code is still an asset, even if it's an asset that the owner doesn't currently use.

Involvement in open source projects has little to do with fashion. The core developers get involved because they're interested in that particular area, not just on whim.

And it's not necessarily a good investment of a company's time and money to develop software in a non-core activity.

True - although a company could find others with a similar need and work something out. Also, there's an increasing chance of other alternatives, too.

Again, the point is that, with open source, you at least have options. Whether you or your company chooses to take advantage of them is another matter.

You have no options whatsoever in the case of proprietary software.
