I don't see why the proprietary nature of FrameMaker is really a problem
when there are many ways to migrate your information to other
"proprietary" systems as well as "open" options.

Open source software can be abandoned as well. What happens if it losses
popularity among developers and all development moves to the latest "in"
project? And it's not necessarily a good investment of a company's time
and money to develop software in a non-core activity.
