thanks eric (and the rest).

the first link was helpful. i now see how and why this question can be so complicated.

CA is iso 2-alpha

CAN is iso 3-alpha

CDN is un vehicle

CAN is ioc olympic

and the other countries are just as complicated.

as for your question/remark, eric, i don't at the moment have enough time to give you a thoughtful response, except to point out that, as i stated earlier, my intention always was to have the developers spell out canada in its entirety.

so why did i ask the question, besides out of personal curiosity? because i like to know what the heck i'm talking about before i go giving instructions to developers (or others). perhaps that is a matter of my personal principle, as well as procedure.

if i tell them to spell out canada everywhere it appears and they ask me, in any event, "just what is the standard abbreviation, anyway?" or if they say, "but we can't spell it out because anything more than three characters will make the entire program explode and knock earth out of orbit and spell doom for us all,"...then i will be able to speak intelligently about the matter, as well as have a contingency plan.

as it stands, if they ask me what is the standard abbreviation for canada, i will say, "look buddy, i don?t get paid enough around here to know all the mysteries of the universe!" ; )

thanks again to all,

diotima -- who happens to live in CA (the blue state on the left with the body-builder governator guy)
