<<Hi Jess

Testing is a specialised area of the project and usually left up to the
software development team.

Tech writers often test and report errors to the development team as part of
their research. I have never been asked to do dedicated testing when hired
to do technical writing, but I suppose it is possible.

I imagine it varies from place to place. In some of the more mature
organizations I have worked for testing is not left up to software
development, but rather is run by a dedicated QA department. Software
development teams do unit testing before they turn the product over to the
QA department.

In more immature organizations, as a tech writer I did a lot of testing, but
it was more ad hoc than the types of organized testing that I learned in
dedicated QA departments. Sometimes I have been assigned as a technical
writer to a QA department and learned to write Test Plans, cases, and
scripts -- in other words, they taught me to function as software QA tester.
