Laurel,

I would not suggest printing it yourself and then having a book
bound...unless you are working with *very* small quantities.
Otherwise, offset printing with multiple-page signatures is much more
efficient and often cheaper.

For anyone who does simply print out their work and take the resulting
paper to a binder, before printing it is a good idea to get detailed
instructions from the bindery regarding appropriate margins and such.

In addition, some laser printer toner is not very durable when a book
becomes hot, although they are all generally *much* improved over just
a few years ago in that regard.

Relatively few lasers will print for less than about $.02 (American)
per page in toner, plus the cost of paper. The paper should (ideally)
be an acid-free variety in a case like this, so it will still be
readable in twenty or thirty years...especially by grandkids and other
relatives.

The other issue is the cover...often, these are offset printed in
color with a UV coating on a heavy-weight stock for durability. In a
very short-run situation, color laser printing may make sense,
although it will add (most likely) about a dollar per copy for each
cover.

This sort of detail can be an unwelcome bit of information when going
the publishing-on-demand route as well as in a fully do-it-yourself
project.

David
