<< Dick is in good company on this one. TECHWR-L once ran a poll question,
"What is the single most important skill set for technical writers to have?"
Of the 1300 votes received, the results were as follows:

Writing/editing skills: 62.77%
Interpersonal skills: 15.23%

Wow! Maybe the composite needs to be greater than 100%! I certainly believe
the Writing/editing skills need to be top notch, but the Interpersonal
skills need to be right up there with them, and I'd like to see a balance!

Business analysis skills need to be in there, too. Product alone, tools
alone, that's not all of it. I'd like to see strong technical skills, the
ability to dig in and learn product, but the ability to "play well with
others" to get stuff that's out of the "self-taught vacuum."

I think technical communicators have to be very well rounded people these
days, perhaps more well rounded than other business professionals. Our
business is evolving, and so must we.
