I'm a passionate data flow diagrammer (a tool
for rigorous top-down task analysis). All true data
flow diagrammer's are noted for their fervent approach
to task analysis.

Data flow diagrams are a tool. As with any other tool, it is easy to become so obsessed with the tool that one treats it as a religious icon, a cure for all ills, and the *only* way to function as a truly professional [fill in the blank with your preferred job title]. Too often, tool fanatics condemn others for ignoring the obvious fascination of *their* tool.

Fiddlesticks. Tools is tools. The means for getting the job done. And, often, one tool is reallytruly as good as another, in spite of personal preferences.

Now, I like data flow diagrams. Sometimes they are extremely useful. They are always fun, providing a respectable workday substitute for the 2000-piece jigsaw puzzles that I play with outside of work hours. But, dataflow diagrams can also be voracious time-consuming hogs and most of my projects just don't deserve them.
