Those ads could be from recruiters who intend to reformat your resume in their layout and possibly modify content. It's much easier for them to do if they have it in Word or RTF.

Hmm. I've seen a _lot_ of ads on Monster and other sites that specifically ask for applicants to send their resumes as Word documents. Is RTF generally considered an acceptable alternative to PDF? I was under the impression that it was more of a cross-platform/cross-version format than Word.
