Jim,
I know what you mean about feeling like a chaperone. Some of those
situations can be awkward. What I've found, though, is that not all
young people are agists. The fact that among themselves they talk about
musical artists I've never heard of or how cool some horror movie was
doesn't mean they can't and won't get involved in a conversation that's
more in keeping with my interests. You'd be amazed the extent to which
these kids are familiar with old movies and old music (meaning stuff you
grew up on, not stuff from your parents' generation).
Aside from movies, music, and the always appropriate cross-generational
topic of local sports (count me out on that one because I don't know
anything about it), consider that you have stories to tell about your
experience that twenty-somethings might actually be interested in.
They've only read in high school history texts about decades you've
lived through. Tell them how it really was. Share work-related war
stories (how you dealt with a lousy manager, for example).
Of course I'm much older than you are, so there's more of a
respect-your-elders dynamic that goes on in my case. And I've probably
also got more stories to tell. But overall I think what you're
describing will become a non-problem if you work at it a bit.
