TechWhirl (TECHWR-L) is a resource for technical writing and technical communications professionals of all experience levels and in all industries to share their experiences and acquire information.
For two decades, technical communicators have turned to TechWhirl to ask and answer questions about the always-changing world of technical communications, such as tools, skills, career paths, methodologies, and emerging industries. The TechWhirl Archives and magazine, created for, by and about technical writers, offer a wealth of knowledge to everyone with an interest in any aspect of technical communications.
> 1. How long have you been a technical communicator?
Including time spent as an engineer, 29 years
> 2. Have you noticed changes in software programs that you use? Explain
> briefly.
Well, for one thing, when I first started, writing was totally "hardware
based"
(i.e., typewriter); over the years, Wordstar -> Word -> Interleaf -> Frame
and still counting.
> 3. Have you noticed a change in salary? Explain briefly.
The biggest change is that today top salaries for technical communicators
are
nearly on a par with that of engineers.
> 4. Do the tasks that you complete now vary from what you did when you
began
> working in this field? Explain briefly.
The primary change is that the support staff that used to be there
(typist/WP
operators, illustrators, etc.) are pretty much gone now.
> 5. How many times have you changed jobs or relocated?
Not counting time spent as an independent contractor, five direct positions,
two relos.
