I was having a similar problem with line spacing, not word spacing, when
working with Word files that had previously been saved on machines running
the Japanese OS and/or version of Word. On my machine, Word's Help file
says that to control line spacing, turn off the Grid option in the Format |
Paragraph dialog box... But there is no such option on my version.
I was getting no useful hints on where to find the Grid option, using
Word's Help and Online support. I use Word 2000 for Windows NT, not the Mac
version, so I couldn't directly use the solution Geoff described. However,
his post led me to use a better search term: "Japanese language support",
which led me to http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/assistance/HA010548811033.aspx
As Geoff reported, I never would have stumbled on this procedure on my own.
Luckily I had access to the installation CD-ROMs that the procedure calls
for. (We have a site license, and our IT department keeps the CDs under
lock and key.) Another problem solved. Geoff, thanks for sharing your
solution! If you run across any other negative side-effects of making this
change, please share these as well.

A while back, I reported a problem editing occasional documents created
using the Japanese version of Word using Word X (under OS X) on my Mac:
the onscreen display of the type didn't match the actual position of
the cursor, and there were weird gaps occuring within and between
words. Needless to say, this made editing using revision tracking a
nightmare--finding the actual cursor position required typing something
to see where the new text would actually appear.
Thanks to Marj Tiefert, I found the solution. The problem was that
although I had installed the necessary Japanese fonts, I'd neglected to
configure Word to use them properly. On the Mac, doing so is, shall we
charitably say, "inobvious"--simple when you know what you're looking
for, but you have to know what to look for. (Ain't that always the
case!) Here's how:
