Re: ADMIN: New TECHWR-L Poll Question
And don't forget to vote in this week's poll: How
did you get your first technical writing job?
Back in the dark ages, when 3086 computers were top-of-the-line and Bernoulli boxes were hot, I was working as a secretarial aid in a government office. When the head secretary suddenly ended up in the hospital for six weeks, I took over the word processing and data entry duties. Later on, I wrote a manual to go along with the data entry process. Voila! My first user manual.
Some years later, I was getting burned out as a community college math instructor. Since I had written two more user manuals (for HP-48g calculators), a legislative report, and a booklet, I gathered my published and unpublished works and went looking for a new job. It was the height of the dot-com era, and I was in the middle of Microsoft Country. It took about six months to get my break; my family room is wallpapered with "don't call us, we'll call you" letters.
