RE: Silly but important to me

I only use the second method. However, when space is available, I put each 
step on its own line. (Two closely related steps like you are describing 
would all APPEAR under the same number.) I think this is helpful to the 
reader. He/she knows that each line is one step. It seems easier to follow 
that way, especially if there are many steps. I also put the result on its 
own line, usually indented or in italicized type. I want the reader to 
quickly identify that this info is the result. Some readers may not need or 
want result information. I believe this techniqe allows readers to easily 
skip over the result (if he/she wants to)  without worrying about missing 
part of the step.

So, here is how your step would look if I were writing it.

1. Highlight the item you want to work
   Press F4.
   Result here in italicized type.

But what do I know, I'm still a student.
