I think as long as your contract doesn't begin until after your official
separation date, you won't have any difficulties with the IRS. In fact,
I'm not even sure if there are any laws preventing someone who is
still on a company's employee rolls from doing work for that same
company as a contractor, because I've seen it done in the past.
