Dan,

The National Institute of Standards and Technology published an interesting
study regarding CD longevity, care and handling. It's the NIST Special
Publication 500-252. You can find it here : http://tinyurl.com/2odky.
In it you will learn why you should always store CDs vertically, avoid
humidity, or why you should never write on a CD (much less use stickers). It
also explains why CD-R media is better than CD-RW for long term storage.

Quite an interesting read for anyone interested in long term data storage.
