Nice argument, and it's used often by organisations around the world. Problem is, the argument is completely specious.

Thanks for challenging this comment.

In addition to those you mention, there are several other reasons to discount this idea:

To start with, people have limited time to be involved in volunteer groups. To give a large chunk of that limited time to the STC, its activities or potential has to mean a lot to you. Many people (including me) prefer to use that time doing things like helping the food bank or a political party on the grounds that they do more good. As for professional involvement, I'd rather help the open source movement for the same reason.

Second, how much do the people in the STC want new people full of new ideas? While there are notable exceptions, many hardcore STCers like being large frogs in their very small puddle, and would view vigorous newcomeers as a threat to their domain.

Third, any organization whose members have to resort to this argument is obviously can't attract newcomers on its own merits. If an organization is useful or interesting, people will want to join it.

Finally, many people who use this argument never consider that those who don't belong may have tried the organization already and found it wanting. In these cases, non-membership is based on disillusion, or a conviction that the organization can't be reformed into something useful.
