Maybe dump task- and role-oriented support and focus on something more basic?

Maybe the STC becomes a academic organization?

This is not something I can answer. They need to make their minds up,
but I just don't see their proposed tactics being fruitful for the
organization or its members.

I maintain: Why pay for services you can get at same quality or better for free?
