I don't know if it fits in this thread but here
goes: You got two columns in a register; one is
names (of employees). so, as you enter the
office, you sign 
 - against your name?
 - beside your name?

It is common in India to say 'against', don't ask
me why?

Oh well, I can tell you why 'beside' doesn't
sound alright. Let us say, the name and signature
coumns are separated (for some reason) by date
and time columns. so then it is not quite beside.
