I've been editing patent descriptions for a company in Belarus for
about six months. Sometimes I do 500 2000-character records per week.
I've also been asked by the company (and I do it at no charge) to
assess candidate translators' skills, and during the last year, I have
had two other clients in the US who are Russian-speaking.

Native Russian speakers --- even professional translators with ten or
more years of experience -- seem to have a problem deciding whether to
use articles at all and which one. Other issues are mainly style
issues. These translators are actually remarkably good, but of course,
they are professional translators.

I did some editing /tutoring for Chinese and Japanese students some
years ago, and found similar problems with articles.
