My invoice transmittal to the publisher:
Yes, I see it now in the memo, XXX. I must admit that I didn't pay
attention at the time because there were more pressing substantive
issues about the meaning of other items in the memo. Had it registered
with me when I read that memo that our e-mail agreement had meant
"book pages," I might have queried you at the time and accepted those
terms. It's quite likely that I would have done so. But I was
operating under the assumption that it was manuscript pages, and only
now notice that when I asked for confirmation of the number of pages
in an e-mail, you did not confirm the page count at 785, but said I
was correct on "both counts," which referred to two other matters I
inquired about. Is there any reason that the distinction of "book
pages" was not mentioned in the initial agreement we made by e-mail?

At any rate, I understand where I made my error. Therefore, I've
attached my invoice to this message. It reflects the billing procedure
that you are requesting.

There's another matter that I would like to discuss with you --
getting feedback and hearing from you whether you want to continue to
use my services. I have asked you about this previously, but if you
have responded by e-mail, I did not receive it.

Can you give me feedback on my performance and tell me whether XXXXX
would like to use my services again? From my perspective, aside from
the normal confusion connected with a first job for a publisher, I
delivered excellent work. Not perfect, of course, but excellent. I
would like to know XXXXX's view of this and to receive some honest
feedback. Would you feel more comfortable doing it by telephone? If
so, may I call you?

One other thing.

I didn't seek to embarrass XXXXX by pointing out the errors in the
tagging instructions, so I hope I haven't offended you by pointing
them out. I sincerely expected that you would be happy to know about
those minor issues -- which to a new editor who is trying to follow
the tagging instructions can be confusing. There is at least one error
in the copyediting guidelines (I believe that there are two statements
about figure titles and one of them is incorrect and perhaps could
confuse another copyeditor as it did me). Because I have received no
response of any kind with regard to my mentioning of this matter to
you, I am left with the sense that you are angry in some way for my
having brought it to your attention. Again, I mean no harm by
informing you. I am doing what any copyeditor does -- she helps her
clients in any way she can with regard to issues of clarity, meaning,
and so forth, whether in the assigned manuscript or in any other
written materials.

I enjoyed working on this project, XXX, very much, by the way.

Could you let me know when I should expect payment?

Best regards,

Bonnie Granat
