Not a new idea. In WWII, the U.S. created the M1942 Liberator pistol,
whose instructions were all pictograms
(http://www.angelfire.com/tx4/bustersbattery/militrivia/MILITRIVIA23.html).
In the U.S. Army in the '80s (when I was in), the Army produced PS
Magazine about preventative maintenance...and it used cartoons to
illustrate how-to instructions. See
http://www.logsa.army.mil/psmag/psonline.htm.
Perhaps it is an effective way of presenting tips to users. Also see
http://www.ok-cancel.com for an HCI comic that illustrates concepts
through humor.
