more likely than not, you have field codes that are
autoupdated somewhere in your doc. could be the TOC,
could be a cross reference. anyway, even though you
did a SAVE, you didn't explicitly ALT-F9 (update
fields) and THEN SAVE, so word does it for you.
or not.
just my guess. same thing happens to me, but only in
docs where i'm using field codes.
