The word on learning InDesign is that if you are familiar with PageMaker, Illustrator, and Photoshop, it takes no more than a few hours (less if you're bright) to be up and running with ID.

Because InDesign was positioned as a Quark-killer, there are plug-ins, tutorials, etc., designed specifically to get Quark users up to speed, too.

If you have zero experience with the Adobe suite, though, and you have, as you say, some experience with Quark, it's a judgment call. Quark has some legacy issues that may occasionally get in your way (it's strictly PostScript Level 1, for example, so PDFs are quirky); but it also has a loyal user base.
