In my experience, yes, this is common. I have often acted as the one-stop shop for proofreading anything and everything that came out of the company, including knowledge base articles that were being submitted daily. But, I liked that system, and I pushed for it, because I hated seeing errors escape.

If you really don't have time, explain to your manager how it will affect the rest of your schedule. If they feel that proofreading is a high enough priority to push back other tasks, then so be it.

Proofreading your own stuff is tricky, and reviewers often don't read for the errors that you mention. Maybe that's why they are keen to have someone who can focus on that aspect of the review.

Maybe you could share the task with another/others who also have the keen eye of a proofreader?
