Oh, they notice all right. But by the time they
realize they won't get any documentation they've
already given you their money. It might be a bit
different if before the purchase, you tell them
something that shows you don't care if they know how
use the product - bit more of a CRM problem.

This is why even though I believe tech docs should be
the property of the technical side of the business, I
have to admit that sales and marketing does have a
legitimate interest. Documentation can and sometimes
does have an effect on company image and therefore on
business.

I figure documentation probably has more impact on
repeat business than on original sales. Customers who
don't get good docs are more likely to feel the
selling company doesn't provide good service, so
they're more likely to switch to a competitor's
product at the next chance.
