I agree with Geoff that pictures are useful if the button is iconic,
and I agree with Dick that the button can be shown somewhere near the
running text rather than interrupting it. At the risk of overobviousness,
I'd like to add two points:

1. If you do put an iconic button into running text, be sure to use
the button's name too. It will help readers associate the name with
the button (which can be useful if later they need to talk about it)
and, for me at least, it is a great help to the imaginary little
intracranial announcer who reads everything aloud in some kind of
meta-time.

2. It's been a few years since I used FrameMaker, but I believe that
like Word, it lets you use a minimum leading or a fixed leading. If
you are putting the button onto the text line, shrink it to a convenient
size and use fixed leading to keep it from taking more space than it
really needs. (As was already noted, subscripting by a few points may
also be appropriate.)
