A few ideas for list-reading in a hurry:

* Don't read the list in the morning. Get some work done first. Read it when you're about to go home.
* Don't read the list in "real time". Allocate a fixed and short length of time to read all the day's messages and post any replies.
* Sort msgs by subject, skipping entire topics. Also sort by Sender, so you don't miss something good.
* Use filters (preferably on the mail server). If someone is annoying, have their messages auto-trashed. You won't miss them. They won't change.
* When finished reading the day's messages, delete them all. Don't reread them or store them. Old msgs are on the archive.
* As outlined by Keith, don't mix up list mail with your regular email. Ideally use a whole 'nother mail account. Even use a different mail client to read the list. That way you're not tempted to peek into techwr-l when checking your business mail.
* If you do post to the list, be minimalist. And don't forget, everything you post will be searchable on Google ... forever.
