Y'know, for people who claim to have some familiarity with disciplines rooted in mathematics, we're a hard lot to satisfy. One or two screw-ups and we're ready to trash a company publicly. Yet we just as publicly bemoan the inefficiencies, misunderstandings, and other human failings--in the companies _we_ work for--that lead to customer dissatisfaction.

Good point. And I have to admit that I've had the odd issue with Amazon as well, though I haven't had W's bad experiences with inept customer service -- Amazon's people always seem intelligent and responsive.

All in all, I vastly prefer Amazon to bn.com. Aside from their customer service issues, BN's web site has a lot of problems, including a slight tendency to list books they don't have in stock. And, unlike Amazon, if they don't have it in stock, you're stuck -- there's no "We can get it for you, if you don't mind a delay."

The really big thing with Amazon is that they work very hard to had new features that make it interesting to browse their site. It's reached the point where I use Amazon to find out information on books and authors, even if I'm not looking to buy anything. Bn.com does that too, but they've always lagged way behind. Like they didn't used to have descriptive reviews of all their books, though Amazon always has. Now Bn.com has them too, but they still don't have excerpts.
