Open up a recent Merriam-Webster dictionary or reference work to the
copyright page and you will see a notice that explains this.
Merriam-Webster is the company that Noah Webster started in 1831.
Yeah, M-W is the original "Webster's". But since the "Webster's" trademark is public domain, they can't prevent anybody else from using it. Probably M-W's dictionaries are the only "Webster's" that are non-hack works.
