Hi Robert,
Without seeing more info about the TW programs I'm not sure I can make a
recommendation. However, I would recommend that you try to get an unpaid part
time internship prior to or or while you're taking classes. This gives you a
sense of what being a techwriter is like in culture as well as the job, will give
you valuable resume fodder, and will also give you Connections so the company
might just hire you when the internship is done.
Contact your local STC or other writers' group, find the best companies to be a
TW for, and then just go to those companies and say "Can I work for you for free
15 hours a week"? ;> Might not work for all companies but I would think that a
lot of TW groups would be ever so happy to have a techie like you helping out
with the docs.
