Re: can you think of an example of 'click on' used in a grammatically incorrect way?
That's the point. For "click" to make any sense whatsoever to a user,
one needs to be over something. So "Click _OK_" is clear to many
people who can see a "thing" with "OK" written on it.
But you're assuming that everyone thinks of "clicking" the same way you do. As I've explained, I think of the mouse button as the thing I click--it's certainly what makes the clicking sound.
So, for me, the verb "click" applies to what I do to the mouse button; "click on" is what I do to a simulated button in the GUI.
...they can't "click" unless they ARE on.
Only if we ascribe the same meaning to "click" as you do. Clearly, not everyone thinks of it that way, so it's quite right to say "In this context 'Click on' is perfectly acceptable."
That's what I meant when I said it's a matter of interpretation and preference.
Yup. Maybe "never" was too strong a word, after all.
And that "never" is all *I* was referring to when I wrote "horsefeathers."

P.S. I'm gonna take that "catalyst for clarity and excellence" thing as
compliement, in case you meant it that way.
;)
