Have you tried the style Organizer to copy styles from the template to
your doc? Sometimes this will do the trick.
If that doesn't do it, another possible cause for the styles not updating
is this: the only styles updated by the "Update all styles automatically"
selection are those styles listed in the "Styles in Use" list in the
template itself. So, if some or all of the styles were defined in the
template but never actually used in the .dot file, the "automatic"
updating doesn't work in your .doc file. Strange but true.
A quick fix is to open the template and cycle through all of the styles,
applying them to a paragraph or text until all have been used. Save the
template, open your doc and try the "Update all styles automatically"
again.
