Having done both journalism (small amounts) and technical writing (very
large amounts), I think Microsoft is being smart here. The skills that
go into journalism -- researching a topic, talking to people who have
information, then writing the results in a way that is clear and
understandable to your audience -- are exactly the same skills needed
for technical writing.

Whatever your opinion of journalists, they're cut from the same cloth we
are, and many journalism majors (no, I wasn't one) have the skills to
make excellent technical writers.
